Check Out These Plants!

In the fall of 2024, Library and Information Technology Services launched the Plant Lending Library. Housed in Carpenter Library, it allows students to “check out” a houseplant to keep in their room for the semester. 

Spearheaded by Laura Surtees, Ph.D. ’12, manager of library experience and engagement, the program was inspired by the positive response to the addition of plants throughout the libraries, as well as a similar program at another college. The Plant Lending Library is designed to provide students with potted plants to promote wellness, decorate their living spaces, and learn more about horticulture through hands-on experience and library resources. 

Plants have been shown to improve wellness, but the transient nature of college life makes it difficult to care for plants in a sustained way, particularly over breaks. The Lending Library gives students a low-stakes way to learn and care for plants, knowing that a librarian is available to answer questions. 

Plants chosen for the Plant Lending Library were propagated from the plants housed in Carpenter Library to promote sustainability.

Currently, there are 24 plants, including golden pothos, spider plants, and purple heart (tradescantia). 

Due to the high demand for the plants—more than 50 students have applied since the program launched—students are selected by lottery. 

“This year, we have been able to connect 48 students with a new green friend,” Surtees says, “and so far, all the plants have survived!”
