Bryn Mawr College's 10-week, first-year student experience course is designed to empower and support students throughout their transition to college. Below, Assistant Director of the First-Year Experience, Andrew Wilbraham, explains how THRIVE plays a vital role in your first semester on campus.

What is THRIVE, and how does it fit into the first-year experience?

While THRIVE is not an acronym, the name reflects the course's central focus: helping students truly thrive in their transition to college-particularly in terms of their overall wellbeing. The course introduces first-years to the Eight Dimensions of Wellness, supporting them in building healthy habits and connecting to campus resources early on. THRIVE extends the learning that begins during Orientation and is designed to be a foundational part of the first-year experience at Bryn Mawr.

What are some of the key topics covered in THRIVE during the 10 weeks?

Throughout the 10-week course, students explore the Eight Dimensions of Wellness: Physical, Intellectual, Social, Emotional, Financial, Spiritual, Environmental and Occupational. While all the dimensions are valuable, students often find the sessions on Social and Occupational Wellness especially meaningful, as they directly relate to forming connections and exploring future goals during this pivotal first year.

What kinds of resources, tools, or activities do students engage with through THRIVE?

Students complete a range of engaging and meaningful assignments designed to connect them with campus and community resources. A few highlights include:

  • Campus Philly Assignment – Students learn how to navigate public transit and explore Philadelphia, helping them feel more at home in the surrounding city.
  • Black at Bryn Mawr Tour – A student-led experience that highlights the often-overlooked histories of Black students, staff, and faculty, fostering deeper awareness and reflection.
  • Strengths Quest – Students take a talent assessment to better understand their unique strengths and how they can apply them in academic, social, and professional contexts.
  • The Philly Project – In small groups, students research and present on a topic related to Philadelphia, helping them build collaboration skills while engaging with the broader community.

Who teaches or facilitates the course, and what can students expect from those instructors or peer mentors?

THRIVE is facilitated by staff from across the College, including offices such as Residence Life, LITS, Financial Aid, Career & Civic Engagement, The Impact Center, Access Services, Academic Support, Global Engagement, and more. Class deans and First Year Experience staff also serve as facilitators. Rather than acting as lecturers or experts, facilitators guide conversations, share resources, and serve as supportive partners in students’ transition to Bryn Mawr. Students can expect an encouraging, collaborative environment where their voices and expertise are valued.

How does THRIVE collaborate with other offices or programs on campus?

Collaboration is essential to THRIVE’s success. The course partners with various campus offices and programs, not only to invite guest facilitators but also to co-develop curriculum and ensure that content reflects the diverse support systems available at Bryn Mawr. This integrated approach reinforces a shared commitment to student wellness and success.

What do you hope students take away from participating in THRIVE—both academically and personally?

Academically, I hope students leave THRIVE with a stronger understanding of how to access and engage with the many resources available to support their success. On a personal level, I hope they discover something new-whether it’s a big idea or a small practical strategy-that they can carry with them beyond the course. Ultimately, I want them to feel more confident and empowered in their ability to care for themselves and navigate college life.

How can incoming students make the most of their time in THRIVE?

Students will get the most out of THRIVE by actively participating-not just by attending but by engaging with the content, contributing to discussions, and connecting with peers. The more students invest in their experience, the more they’ll take away in terms of insight, community, and support.
