Dear faculty and staff colleagues:
Please join me in welcoming Brandyn J. Hicks, an accomplished attorney who brings years of experience in higher education and practice across multiple sectors, as our incoming General Counsel for Bryn Mawr, effective June 16th. In her role, Brandyn will serve as Bryn Mawr鈥檚 chief legal officer, providing strategic legal guidance on governance, compliance, and institutional priorities to the College and its trustees, officers, faculty and staff.
She will join us from Johns Hopkins University, where she has served since 2017 as associate general counsel. In her current role, Brandyn provides advice and counsel to university leaders on a range of complex employment matters and student and faculty issues. She has helped Johns Hopkins navigate its response to executive orders, agency directives, and other federal actions that directly affect the university鈥檚 research mission.
As a trained litigator, Brandyn has represented the university in matters before the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and the NCAA. She has expertise in several areas relevant to higher education, including academic freedom, policies and procedures, civil rights, campus safety, athletics, research compliance, and student affairs.
Prior to Johns Hopkins, Brandyn served as director of institutional compliance and policy for Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Originally from Philadelphia, Brandyn began her career in public interest as an assistant district attorney for the Philadelphia District Attorney鈥檚 office, where she prosecuted narcotics distribution and sexual misconduct cases, and later served as an Assistant State鈥檚 Attorney for the City of Baltimore.
Brandyn serves on the Board of Trustees of The Friends School of Baltimore and the Board of Directors of Maryland Legal Aid. She is actively involved in pro bono work, including serving as an expungement attorney for Maryland Legal Aid.
She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, with honors, from Swarthmore College, where she swam competitively on the women鈥檚 swim team. She earned her Juris Doctor from Temple University Beasley School of Law.
Thank you to the search committee for their service. The committee members included chair Millie Bond, Senior Advisor for External Relations and Secretary of the College, Samir Datta, Vice President for Finance and Administration, and Board of Trustees members Jeff Kohn P'16 and Margaret Breen '82.
I hope you will join me in welcoming Brandyn and her family to the Bryn Mawr community.
